Aquariums & other indoor airconditioned places: Spend a day marveling at marine life in air-conditioned comfort at places like Shinagawa Aquarium, Sumida Aquarium at SkyTree, or Tokyo SeaLife Park at Kasai Rinkai Park. Other places, great especially if travelling with kids are TeamLab Borderless, TeamLab planets, Legoland or Joypolis in Odaiba.
Kakigori (Shaved Ice): This popular dessert comes in various flavors like matcha, strawberry, and melon. Try some at famous spots like Sabo Okuno in Shibuya, Cafe Tsuji in Kita Sengu, Yelo in Roppongi or Himitsudo in Yanaka.
Mizu Yokan: A chilled, sweet jelly made from red bean paste, mizu yokan is a traditional Japanese treat that’s both refreshing and delicious.
Cold Noodles: Dishes like hiyashi chuka (cold ramen) or zaru soba (cold buckwheat noodles) are perfect for a light, refreshing meal. They offer a delightful array of chilled and frozen goodies such as kakigori (shaved ice) in various flavors like strawberry, matcha, and melon. You can also find cooling beverages, including icy coffee drinks, flavored water, and unique seasonal sodas. For a more indulgent treat, try the various ice creams and frozen desserts, such as mochi ice cream and ice bars.
Softcream: Travelling around? Be sure to try Japan’s delightful softcream icecream that showcases the country's creativity and love for unique flavors. Traditional Tenugui: are flat-woven cotton cloths that are about 90 cm (2.9 feet) x 35 cm (1.1 feet) in size. It is said that tenugui were already in use during the Nara Period (A.D. 710-794). Mount Takao: Just an hour from Tokyo, Mount Takao offers scenic trails and cooler temperatures. The lush greenery and mountain breezes provide a pleasant escape from the city heat.
Hakone: Famous for its hot springs, Hakone is also cooler in the summer. Enjoy boat rides on Lake Ashi and visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum.
Karuizawa: Nestled in the mountains, Karuizawa offers a refreshing escape from the heat with its cool, pleasant weather and a ton of natural beauty.
Nikko: Nikko is renowned for the magnificent Toshogu Shrine, which is celebrated for its lavish wood carvings and gold embellishments. Among its most famous features are the three wise monkeys, symbolizing the adage "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." It is usually a couple degrees cooler than Tokyo.
Kamikochi: Located in the Northern Japan Alps, Kamikochi is a beautiful highland area with breathtaking views, hiking trails, and cooler temperatures. It’s perfect for a refreshing getaway.
